Galilæana. Studies in Renaissance and Early Modern Science

About

Galilæana is an international scientific journal, which publishes blind peer-reviewed research articles in the history of Renaissance and early modern science. The journal focuses on topics relating to the life, scientific work, achievements legacy of Galileo. The journal also welcomes submissions that, while not directly pertaining to Galilean studies, will be of interest to historians engaged in research on science and culture in early modern Europe.

Galilæana also hosts other forms of contribution, from historical and bibliographical notes to invited papers and essay reviews. The journal is articulated in the following sections: Essays, Texts & Documents, Iconography, Essay Reviews, News, and is enriched with special focuses on specific subjects (please read the related call for papers in the Announcements section of this website).

From 2023 Galilæana is no longer printed by Olschki in paper version (2004-2022) and has become an online open-access journal.

English is the preferred publication language on Galilæana, along with the Italian language. Submissions in the major European languages may be considered for evaluation as long as the author(s) commits to provide an English translation if the submission is accepted for publication. Submitted papers ought to include an abstract (150 words) in English.

The journal is indexed in Scopus, the Arts & Humanities Citation Index, and ERIH plus.

    The art of memory encompasses techniques for memorization that have been passed down from classical culture, particularly within the context of rhetorical training. This Focus aims to broaden current historiographical perspectives by examining the uses of mnemonics by individuals engaged in natural-philosophical research, including cases of cross-fertilization between the sciences and the studia humanitatis.

    Call for Guest Editors

    Galilæana seeks proposals for themed issues led by a guest editor (or guest editors). Any theme that falls within the broad field of Renaissance and early modern science, including the history of medicine and the history of technology, is acceptable.

    Galilæana’s new course

    Twenty years after its first issue (2004), Galilæana changes its look and format. It will no longer be a paper journal and will be released online in open access format.

    Call for papers | Galileo and Literature

    Galilæana, issue 1-2024. Call for papers.

    The aim of this call is to draw attention to two specific issues of historical, literary, and philosophical research. On the one hand, the objective is to explore how Galileo considered and used literature; on the other, to observe how past and current writers and intellectuals have tested and enriched their knowledge with Galileo’s teachings.
